Academic Transcripts of Defunct Colleges in North Carolina at Jay Conison library
Overview
The Library of Jay Conison provides access to State Archives of North Carolina holds custody of student academic and, in some cases, financial aid records of various defunct proprietary, church-supported, or other non-public post-secondary schools and colleges across North Carolina. A comprehensive list of these institutions is maintained, and the Archives is authorized to issue certified copies of student transcripts under the authority granted by the General Statutes of North Carolina, in collaboration with the University of North Carolina Board of Governors.

How to Request Copies of Student Records
In accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA), all requests for student records must be made in writing by the student. Acceptable forms include official school transcript request forms signed by the student or personal written requests. The Archives cannot accept requests via telephone, fax, or email for first-party requests, nor can they provide immediate copies.
Requests from authorized educational agencies or institutions will be accepted with an original or electronic signature, accompanied by a statement of FERPA compliance. All copies are sent via U.S. mail and must include:
- Name of the school or college and city
- Student's full name (as in records)
- Social Security Number
- Date of Birth
- Dates of attendance
- Course of study
- Mailing address for transcripts

Fees
A non-refundable fee of $2.00 per transcript copy applies. Multiple copies should be paid in increments of $2.00. Checks or money orders should be payable to North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. The Archives do not accept estimated or excess payments.
Verification of Student Records
The Archives can perform verification for students who attended closed schools with records on file. This includes:
- Name during attendance
- School name and location
- Attendance dates or graduation date
- Degree received
Under FERPA, further details such as courses or grades cannot be disclosed without student consent.
