Newspapers

This group includes microfilm copies of newspapers, over 1,000 titles preserved since 1959. An ongoing project catalogs every existing North Carolina newspaper meeting specific criteria, with copies available for research in the Microfilm Room.

Early newspapers (1752 -1890s) are accessible online via DigitalNC, and later editions are digitized through Chronicling America, in partnership with UNC Chapel Hill and the Library of Congress.

African American Education

This collection features documents and photographs related to African American education in North Carolina before 1950, from the Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum and the State Archives. Materials include photographs, yearbooks, and records from the Department of Public Instruction.

District Superior Court Records

Contains records from the Edenton District (1756-1806), including estate settlement documents, bonds, appeals, guardians' records, and more. These records highlight North Carolina's evolving judicial history from colonial to early statehood.
